Gereba
SYNOPSIS
GEREBA is the result of the 2023 Dança em Trânsito artistic residency, bringing together researcher of Brazilian popular dances, choreographer, dancer, and visual artist Marcio Cunha (Rio de Janeiro) with local artists from São Luís, Maranhão.
GEREBA is a research project—an exploration of Maranhão’s traditional dances, with a particular focus on Tambor de Crioula, the encantarias (spiritual enchantments), and the figure of the boi.
The performance is composed of songs, rituals, memories of the artists, and their ancestry—present in the skirts, the drums, the ritual smoke, and the symbolic imagery.
GEREBA is a tribute to the richness of this land and its artists. With deep respect for its traditions, it humbly asks permission to present our scenic ritual within this terreiro.
Hail Saint Benedict!
Hail all the enchanted spirits of this land!
